When leaving Magento is the right call

We make our living on Magento, so read this with that in mind. But we’ve been in eCommerce since 2002, and pretending every merchant should stay doesn't serve anyone.

Stay if you have

  • Meaningful customization
  • B2B complexity
  • ERP-driven catalog
  • A need to own your stack and data
  • It already does everything you want and need

Leave if

  • Simple catalog
  • No custom business logic
  • Limited in-house or agency technical capacity
  • Shopify’s constraints are genuinely acceptable

A simple store on Shopify with no developer is cheaper than a simple store on Magento with one. If that’s your column: how we handle an exit →

The trap in the middle

Replatform to escape a bad platform, not a bad agency experience. You’ll spend a rebuild’s budget just to import your problems. Fix the maintainer first, then decide what's best. Keep your store running →

Stay or go · five questions

1 · How deep does your customization go?
2 · B2B / ERP complexity?
3 · Technical capacity today?
4 · Catalog complexity?
5 · Where do you see the store in 3 years?

If you stay: the platform deserves a maintainer. Managed Magento →

If you go: we’ll help you hand off cleanly.

Common questions

Is Magento still viable?
Yes. Adobe’s new feature investment moved to its paid SaaS tiers, but Magento Open Source lives on, and Mage-OS is a community-governed distribution with a regular release cadence, faster patching, and independent governance. We help maintain it. There is nuance: the ecosystem is smaller and more B2B/complex-catalog than it was; that’s exactly the kind of store the platform still serves best.
Magento vs. Shopify for mid-market?
Shopify wins on simplicity and operating cost for simple catalogs. Magento wins where customization, B2B workflows, ERP integration, and stack ownership matter. The five questions above can help guide your decision.

The Shopify sales machine is ruthless and has captured a lot of the small market, but it doesn't fit all. We've seen many merchants move from Magento only to find their monthly costs ended up higher and their options are more limited.
What does Magento actually cost to run?
Hosting + maintenance + ongoing support and improvements. Realistic annual ranges: $10k to $50k per year, all-in, highly dependent on your volume and needs.

You can cut corners to do it cheaper, but then Magento probably isn't the right fit anyway.

Whichever way you decide: decide with a real assessment.
