eCommerce Lessons From Game Of Thrones: Loyalty

As I have already pointed out in previous posts, there are multiple reasons to love Game of Thrones. However, I have found that it is the characters that keep me coming back each week. We all want someone or something to believe in, and the characters of Game of Thrones provide just that. Every episode, I cheer on my favorite characters in hopes that they will survive another week in Westeros. Looking back over the past seasons, I have realized that many of the traits that draw me to characters are also the traits your eCommerce site should utilize to secure and inspire loyal customers.

In the world of eCommerce, it is easy to get caught up focusing on making new sales or chasing bigger accounts. However, in doing so you may be missing something essential to keeping your business running smoothly and successfully- paying attention to your current customers that are loyal to your brand.

To help you gain some focus and build your loyal customer base, take a look at what these characters can teach us!

Tyrion Lannister- Be True to Yourself

Tyrion is the quintessential underdog and proves that regardless of the ups and downs you face in life you can remain strong and persevere. Although he is often mocked due to his size and deformities, he remains diligent and never lets the weakness perceived by others crush his spirit. He is cunning and calculating when dealing with his enemies and sympathetic and compassionate towards those he sees as helpless. He never pretends to be something he is not and he never accepts those who do.

When building brand loyalty, you can never abandon who you are. Pretending to be something you are not will deceive your customers. According to Forbes, honesty is essential. If you want your customers to keep coming back, you must deliver the product they are expecting and never make promises you cannot keep

Remaining true to your brand is the best way to create customer loyalty and build a relationship with your customers that is rooted in honesty and integrity.

Daenerys Targaryen – Freedom Fosters Value

After purchasing a troop of unsullied (a group of elite but enslaved soldiers), Daenerys provides them with something they have not known in a long time- their sense of freedom, their names and their value. In doing so she is able to gain their loyalty.

To secure a loyal customer base you must recognize customer value. From the customer’s point of view, your company exists to create value for them and to provide them with results. Increasing customer value is an essential step in building loyalty. Never forget that your customers are the reason for your success. They are the base upon which you will grow.

Arya Stark -Do What it Takes to Survive

Without a doubt, the one character that has the ability to always steal the hearts of viewers is Arya. She is resilient, she is brave, and she never gives up. Each step in her life is a struggle and often seems impossible; but with each struggle she grows stronger.

So what is her secret? No matter what obstacle presents itself, Arya adapts and moves forward. She never backs down and refuses to let anything get in her way.

Building brand loyalty is no different. You must always be prepared to do what it takes. Whether it is adapting to changing trends, offering discounts, or admitting mistakes, you cannot remain stagnant because your competitors will be more than willing to jump in and steal your loyal customers.

The characters of Tyrion, Daenerys, and Arya offer some unique lessons on how you can increase customer loyalty. If you show some love to your customers through remaining true to your brand, instilling customer value, and doing what it takes to remain strong– you will find that customer referrals increase, social sharing explodes, testimonials pour in, and customer retention and loyalty will reach an all-time high!
