One of the greatest lessons in life and business has been playing out for six seasons on Game of Thrones: denying reality can cost you the throne. In other words, there are some basic realities that one must accept in order to succeed. Using some of my favorite quotes from the last few seasons of Game of Thrones, here are some lessons from the show about how to keep it real on your way to the top!
“Every flight begins with a fall.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
No matter what we do, our actions hold the potential to cause unintended results. Every day, people come up with brilliant ideas. Some people develop a plan, consider all the possible outcomes, and jump in head first. However, just as that person thinks nothing could go wrong; something usually does.
Many people would give up when they see their idea falling apart. But, just like many of the characters have learned in Game of Thrones, those mistakes and unintended consequences provide access to the kind of ingenuity that has the potential to skyrocket to success.
Reality Check: Mistakes are an inherent part of human nature and sometimes those epic letdowns can lead to success if you take the time to apply the lessons learned. Embrace your mistakes and grow stronger!
“When you play a game of thrones, you win or you die.”
― Cersei Lanister, A Game of Thrones
Every fan of Game of Thrones remembers when these words came to life in season one. We watched as major players began to crumble as they doubted their choices and allowed distractions to get in their way. We watched as alliances were formed and broken all in hopes of acquiring the throne. Yes, the characters were often ruthless; but no one wants to come in second.
In business, you have to decide if you are willing to settle for second best or if you want to make it to the top. Nurturing this mindset doesn’t mean you simply throw caution to the wind and take unrealistic risks. It means that you need to use your skills, create a plan of attack, and move forward guided by your survival instinct. You need to have a clear focus and not lose sight of what you want.
Reality Check: In order to be successful, you need to know what you want and work toward it relentlessly. There is only room for one at the top.
“Fear cuts deeper than swords.”
― Syrio Forel, A Game of Thrones
This piece of wisdom was passed from the fencing instructor, Syrio Forel, to the beloved Arya Stark. Sadly, she has had to take these words to heart while facing circumstances that grown men would run from. In watching Game of Thrones, it becomes evident that fear is a useful emotion because it offers a picture of an unknown future as well as a warning to be cautious moving forward. For Arya, fear has sharpened her senses and reminded her to be aware of her surroundings at all times. In addition, Game of Thrones is riddled with characters who claim to be fearless; but viewers often realize it is nothing more than a shield for a person who lacks a realistic view of their situation.
In real life and in business, fear often acts as a stimulus for rationality while also bringing clarity to given situations. However, fear can also have some negative impacts. Fear can hold you back and prevent you from leaving your comfort zone. It also can prevent you from standing up for yourself.
Reality Check: Continuously living in fear of trying something new, never taking a chance, or never standing up for yourself will immobilize you. However, a healthy dose of caution can keep your senses honed and keep your eyes open to new opportunities and solutions.
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”
― Tyrion Lannister, A Game of Thrones
During Tyrion’s time at the Wall, he forges a friendship with Jon Snow as both men connect over being outcasts. Tyrion offers the above quote to help Jon come to terms with his identity and to take the views of others with a grain of salt. He encourages Jon to take the weaknesses perceived by others and turn them into his greatest strengths.
In today’s business world, a company must always remain true to their identity in order to effectively communicate with their employees and customers. If promises are made- keep them! According to Glenn Llopis, a writer for Forbes, “It’s not about a lot of empty phrases and meaningless vision statements; it’s about practicing what you preach.” Never abandon your true self because of undue influence from someone else.
Reality Check: Know your fundamental strengths and work on mitigating your weaknesses. Keep your word consistently so you can continue to build a customer base rooted in trust and reliability.
As a business, taking a few minutes to give yourself a reality check now will help ensure you remain resilient in the future. Learn from your greatest mistakes, persevere through difficulties, don’t be afraid of the unknown, and never forget who you are. Like the Game of Thrones, there will be distractions and temptations along the way; but keeping it real is the best strategy for attaining the throne!
